Within
days of Hurricane Katrina, Christus Victor
Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi,
became
a hurricane disaster response center for
communities along the Gulf Coast.
The storm destroyed about 64,000 homes in
Mississippi and damaged another 78,000.
During the months
that followed Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the
church's walls were stretched trying to
accommodate regular services and
activities, providing office space for case
management, and housing and feeding thousands of
volunteers.
In
June 2006, we moved our operations to Camp
Victor, a new facility inside a former factory.
The larger space allowed us to consolidate all
our departments under one roof.
In
September 2007, we became Camp Victor Ministries
to better reflect our expanded mission. Our
volunteer support program is now under the
auspices of Lutheran Episcopal Services in
Mississippi.
There will be a
great need to provide
food and supplies to
hurricane victims and to aid in the clean-up, repair, and
reconstruction of damaged homes for years to come.
As of March 2008, most experts estimate that the
Mississippi Gulf Coast is only about 20%
rebuilt. |
